Notes: William James Stillman was an American artist, art critic, journalist, diplomat and photographer. His best known photographs are views of the Acropolis he produced in 1869, of which this image is an excellent example. He later published the views, including a variant of this one in 1870. A. D. White knew Stillman and sought his advice in purchasing photographs during his 1889 visit to Athens.
