West German
National Anthem a.k.a. Deutschland Lied adapted from the
2nd movement of the "Kaiser Quartet" Op. 76, #1 by Franz Joseph
Haydn; Lyrics:
"Unity and Rights and Freedom
For the German Fatherland
Let us all strive for that
Brotherly with heart and hand.
Unity and Rights and Freedom
Are the foundation for happiness
Bloom in the glow of happiness
Bloom German Fatherland."
*East German National Anthem a.k.a
Auferstanden aus Ruinen (1949) by Hans Eisler. Lyrics by Johannes
Becher were sung up until 1961 when the Wall was erected and they
were no longer thought appropriate for a Germany thus divided. Lyrics:
"Rising from the ruins,
And devoted to the future,
Let us serve Good,
Germany, a united Fatherland.
Old neccessities force us to act,
And together we will act as one,
For then we must surely succed,
And the sun, like never before,
Will shine over Germany
Will shine over Germany."
