On this opening page, entitled Fathers & Regimes, we have arranged
six icons: the six heads, of the six leaders, or "Fathers", as we
are calling them so as to blur the line between formal portrait
and mugshot. Each Father/Leader represents an entire political regime
and its end -- what we are calling "Death of the Father."
If your browser is javascript enabled, moving your cursor over each
image reveals another shadowy image concealed beneath it, which
is intended to suggest a tombstone or statuary. The red text identifies
the Father and his regime. Clicking on a Father's image will take
you to his page.
Each Father's page consists of short texts
and 4-6 images marking three areas of focus: Form of Authority,
Death & Transition, and Consequences. In the next few weeks
we'll be adding links like this one where you can read more about
how we put the particular page together.
Clicking on any small image will link you to a larger version of
the image with a caption, associated sound, and some text about
the sound and image chosen. Activate the sound by clicking on the
ear icon. Sound files can take a seemingly long time to load, but
they are worth the wait and are a crucial element of experiencing
the site.
Our intent is that the text make up only a portion of this site.
We urge you to spend time studying the images and listening to the
sounds selected to represent the regime. The interlinked media (image,
sound, text) have been thoughtfully chosen to suggest a way to experience
of the site -- what we are calling an exercise in intermediality.
This site suggests a beginning for studying regime ends, and we
have by no means attempted to make it complete in and of itself,
even as we widen its scope. We urge you to visit other web sites,
acquaint yourself with relevant films, music, and visual art, and
read other texts, including our forthcoming book. Watch for our
video, which, like our book, is entitled
Death of the Father: An Anthropology of the Ends of Political
Authority.
Finally, our discussion forum on this web site (coming soon!) provides
a place to record your impressions of the material, pose questions
to our team and other visitors to the site, and comment on the remarks
of others. Please do not hesitate to start a new discussion thread
or pick up on one already underway!
