The diverse Political Americana collections required a comprehensive treatment
and housing plan to preserve the items as historic artifacts. Because
of the poor storage and fragile condition of the collections, conservation
treatment and rehousing were the necessary first steps to stabilize and
organize the collections and resulted in improved handling and workflow
for cataloguing and digital imaging. Specialized
treatments were developed to meet the needs of the wide range of artifacts
with varying compositions and condition concerns, and custom storage solutions
were designed to fit this diverse group of objects into a library and
archives setting while meeting national standards. By
treating these fragile collections to correct or slow deterioration and
upgrading the housing to library standards, the collections were safely
and efficiently stored, protected during use and transport, and readily
accessible for research, exhibit, and instruction. Safe handling instructions and exhibit guidelines were developed
to educate staff and users to the particular needs of this collection.
